Seventeen-year-old Parker Frost has never taken the road less traveled. Valedictorian and quintessential good girl, she’s about to graduate high school without ever having kissed her crush or broken the rules. So when fate drops a clue in her lap—one that might be the key to unraveling a town mystery—she decides to take a chance.

Julianna Farnetti and Shane Cruz are remembered as the golden couple of Summit Lakes High—perfect in every way, meant to be together forever. But Julianna’s journal tells a different story—one of doubts about Shane and a forbidden romance with an older, artistic guy. These are the secrets that were swept away with her the night that Shane’s jeep plunged into an icy river, leaving behind a grieving town and no bodies to bury.

Reading Julianna’s journal gives Parker the courage to start to really live—and it also gives her reasons to question what really happened the night of the accident. Armed with clues from the past, Parker enlists the help of her best friend, Kat, and Trevor, her longtime crush, to track down some leads. The mystery ends up taking Parker places that she never could have imagined. And she soon finds that taking the road less traveled makes all the difference.

“But sometimes life gives us those rare moments where we do see chance as it’s happening. And in those moments, we have a choice. And sometimes we have to take a risk. And it’s scary. It makes us vulnerable. But I know now it’s worth it.” - Parker Frost

Golden was taking the blogosphere by storm! Not a day went by that I didn't hear someone gushing about this book.

First off, the cover alone is enough to gush about. It is absolutely stunning! I think the cover model was the perfect choice to capture everything that this book is about!

I had a love/hate relationship with the novel. I adored this novel. I loved it but I hated that it had to end! Do you ever come across those novels that leave you breathless? You can relate so well with a character that you feel that there is a little piece of you inside this book. It speaks to you in a way that you rarely experience with a book? That is the reading experience I had with Golden.

Parker was not my most favourite character in the beginning, but that is okay! I don't have to love every character. I liked her! I liked her a lot, in fact. However, there were moments throughout the book where she irritated me just a little bit. I think that made me love the book even more though. She was a very real character. She was whinny and over-dramatic at times; But those are very realistic reactions for a teenage girl. Especially ones that are in an academic pressure-cooker! However, she completely wowed me by the end of the novel, and I was left wiping away the tears.

Julianna is where I fell in love with this book. Her story just broke my heart, yet I could relate to it so much! No, I didn't find myself in the romantic situation she was in. I related to her in the way of self discovery. I remember that pivotal moment where what you had planned turned out not to be in the cards for you at all! That moment where you are reaching your crossroads, you thought all along you knew which way to go, but then all of a sudden you are drawn to a completely different path. Everything you thought you knew is now challenged.

In almost all the books I've read, there will be a character that houses a trait I can relate to; But my feelings and relation with Julianna and Parker was a whole different level. Self discovery is a beautiful thing, and that is what this novel is about. Learning who you are, breaking away from who you once were, and stepping into the unknown. Taking a leap of faith.

This is my first novel by Jessi Kirby and she has completely swept me off my feet. Her lyrical writing style and story building is rare delight. Golden was truly a treat for the soul! She has already proven to me that she can craft the most wonderful characters that will leave you speechless. I can't wait to devour her previous and future work!

Friendship, romance, self growth and discovery; Golden is a good-for-you kind of read!

  1. I absolutely loved everything about this book. It is such a beautiful story, and the cover is perfect as well, definitely stands out. I was more interested in Julianna's story myself but it was nice to see what Parker learned about herself. All of the characters were so real and that is what made this book amazing. Love you review!

  2. This was such a highly effective visitor publish. As an ambitious writer, being rejected is always terrifying (yet so possible) result - if I ever posted my guide, of course. I appreciate Jill for discussing her issues, and I'm so grateful that she made the decision to look previous the denials and perform around them and get her guide out there. That was amazingly brave! Asylum looks fairly exciting, too, so I'll be maintaining an eye out for your evaluation.

    Thanks for discussing, you two!
