A breathtaking journey toward self-discovery and true love, from the author of If I Stay.
When sheltered American good girl Allyson "LuLu" Healey first meets laid-back Dutch actor Willem De Ruiter at an underground performance of Twelfth Night in England, there’s an undeniable spark. After just one day together, that spark bursts into a flame, or so it seems to Allyson, until the following morning, when she wakes up after a whirlwind day in Paris to discover that Willem has left. Over the next year, Allyson embarks on a journey to come to terms with the narrow confines of her life, and through Shakespeare, travel, and a quest for her almost-true-love, to break free of those confines.
"It's always about the accidents"
Thank you again, Gayle Forman, for penning such a beautiful piece of work!
Ever since I finished Where She Went I couldn't wait to get my hands on Gayle Forman's next novel, even though at that time I had no idea what it would be about. Forman has proved to be an epic story teller. She will whisk you away and hold you captive(willingly!) until you turn the last page. Isn't it wonderful when a book kidnaps you?
Adolescence, self discovery, love, and growth was what filled the pages of this novel. We get the privilege to witness an amazing character transformation. I believe that Allyson(Lulu) and Willem will stay in your hearts long after you close the book. You can't help but fall in love with them, care for them, laugh and cry with them! After the first 20 pages, that's it! They are no longer characters in a novel. Willem, Allyson AND Lulu will become dear friends of yours. You will embark on this wonderful day with them. Gayle Forman took the beautiful streets of Paris, the dazzling architecture and sweet smells from the patisserie's and placed them all in my living room. I could taste, smell and feel everything. Just One Day was so visually stunning!
One thing that I loved most, and it was just a minor thing was the author's portrayal of Willem. He wasn't this brooding tall, dark and handsome type(well, he was tall). She gave him flaws, and quirks that made him real. Which was so much more swoon worthy than any chiseled, dark knight in shining armour.
A beautiful novel that will transport you to the side of two of the most lovely characters I have come across. I loved every second of this novel..Like I didn't think I would! Gayle Forman is just a mastermind when it comes to writing and I look forward to her future work!
The only thing I'm not happy about is the year long wait for Just One Year. Now that is going to be a tough one!
Sum it Up With a Song
The song I would use to best describe this book, or the feelings I had while reading it is:
