Interview with a Blogger: Beauty and the Bookshelf

How long have you been blogging?

My first post ever went up on September 17, 2010, but it wasn’t for the current blog, Beauty and the Bookshelf. It was called For the Love of Reading—I think—and it wasn’t originally for reviewing. I think I started it for info on my senior project For the Love of Reading, which was a book signing I put together with some local authors. Eventually, I neglected the blog. But then I came back and wanted to do reviews and such, and my first one was posted on March 31, 2012. Since then, I’ve done memes, interviews, reviews, book tours, cover reveals, and so on. While I’ve been horrible at reviews—book slumps and time are destroying me—I’d say I started being a more continuous blogger toward the end of May and beginning of June. So I’ve been blogging for about four months or so. (Which would’ve been much easier to just say at the beginning.)

What inspired you to start a book blog?

You know, I’m really not quite sure. I think it just might have been my love for reading, and I wanted to express and share that with others. Plus, there was a part of me that thought a lot of people weren’t bookworms like I was. Now that I’m in the blogging world and seeing everything, I know that I was wrong—there are a ton of bookworms like me, and it’s awesome!

Tell us 3 random things about yourself

1. I can’t swim.

2. I’ve had all kinds of pets, including several pigs. I currently have two cats (Big Kitty and O’hara) and a hedgehog named Odair.

3. I have a freckle on the bottom of my foot. I’m really proud of it.

And you should be proud of that freckle! And I am very jealous that you had pet pigs. I've always wanted one!

What is your all-time favourite book?

Twilight! That book made me be an avid reader and want to become a writer. I don’t understand all the hate toward it and Stephenie Meyer—I love it and am a totally Twihard. (I’ve gone to every movie at midnight and already have my tickets for Breaking Dawn – Part 2; I have all kinds of Twilight things: ornaments, books, magazines, wedding rings, jewelry, a pillowcase, a blanket, an Edward Barbie doll, shirts, etc.) TWILIGHT FOREVER!

Me, too! Twilight totally re-ignited by love for reading!

If you could only take 3 books with you from your bookshelf, what books would they be? First, I’d just like to say that this question is cruel—I hate choosing. That said:

1. Twilight by Stephenie Meyer because it’s my favorite.
2. The Host by Stephenie Meyer because I love it and don’t tire of it.
3. Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins because it’s a happy, wonderful read.
*Stretches arms* *Wipes sweat off brow* *Breathes heavily* That was hard.

LOVED The Host!

Where is your dream reading spot?

I really just like lying in my bed at night and reading with a small source of light. I think it’s the best time to read—it’s quiet and peaceful, and people can’t bother me while I’m trying to read.

What is one guilty pleasure that you have?

Buying books. But I only feel guilty toward my bank account.

Finish this sentence "I can't live without..."?

Ah, yes. I guess that is some what of a necessity...

If you could spend the day with any book character, who would it be and why?

This question is SO HARD. I could say so many book characters, and I know that there isn’t just one person I could choose. So, the following is just one of the people that I would choose; I don’t think I have a number one. And that character is: Shane Collins from The Morganville Vampires series by Rachel Caine. If you know me and my blog, then you know I mention those books whenever I possibly can. Why? Because I love them. Because they could go on forever and I’d never, ever tire of them. I love almost every character in the books, and Shane Collins is no exception. I love him, I love him and Claire together, I love him with his friends, I love his sarcasm, I love his quirks—I just love him. And I’d love to spend a day with him.

Haven't read that Series yet *Ducks from flying books*

What advice would you give future or new bloggers?

Just have fun! And read, of course. And be aware that it’s not ten minutes every day. I’m not a big blogger at all, but I still have a list taller than the world of books that I want to read, and with school and life and everything, it’s hard to read them all. It takes time, so make sure you can tell it.

Bump in the Night Quiz

Halloween is right around the corner, do you have a favourite scary read?

I don’t like scary things—they scare me—so I don’t really have a favorite scary read, since I don’t read a lot of scary books. However, I have read some and would definitely recommend The Skeleton Man by Joseph Bruchac (short but creepy), Ten by Gretchen McNeil (great horror novel), and Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake (some parts seriously scared me).

What was your favourite Halloween Costume as a child?

I was Elle Woods from Legally Blonde once. I had a pink skirt, shirt, hat, and purse, complete with a one-dimensional, Styrofoam Chihuahua. I’m still upset that I lost the hat.

Do you have a favourite scary movie that you watch each year?

I hate scary, so no. But I do like certain movies—the Disney Channel classics: Under Wraps,
Phantom of the Megaplex, Mom’s Got a Date with a Vampire, Don’t Look Under the Bed, The Scream Team, and Halloweentown.

What is your favourite Halloween treat?

Chocolate! The houses with king-size candy bars are the best.

 Ghosts or Zombies?

Ghosts. I hate zombies.

Vampire or Werewolves?

This is tough, but I think I’ll go with the vampires.

Show me your Bookshelf

I’m getting ready to move soon, so the bookshelf will look very differently. Most of my books are pictured there, with the left half on the floor being library books and the right half being ARCs; I also have some stacks of books in the closet. I’m excited to move so I can get a third bookshelf.

Hedgehog: Odair the hedgehog, not in a grumpy mood.

Be sure to stop by The Beauty and the Bookshelf and say Hello!

Share with the world:

  1. Thanks for having me! And I'd never throw books at someone...(;

  2. Love the Morganville Vampires; Shane is a fab choice! =)

I'm not the biggest fan of the Twilight series at all, mostly because of Breaking Dawn, but I think Stephenie Meyer is amazing for making so many people read. It's pretty astounding how many bloggers I've heard of who credit Twilight as getting them into reading again, and especially into reading YA.
