Interview with a Blogger: The Zealous Reader

The Crazy Bookworm is thrilled to welcome Laura from The Zealous Reader

How long have you been blogging?

6 months. My blogaversary was July 3.

What inspired you to start a book blog?

I did the 100-in-2010 challenge last year with some of my book club friends and noticed some people were updating on blogs. My one friend found The Story Siren and I was hooked. I needed a project for 2011 and the rest is history!

Tell us 5 things about yourself

I live in Ontario, Canada, I love sushi, I’m obsessed with making lists, I can’t stop watching the Food Network, and I’m dying to visit Ireland.

If you could have dinner with any book character in history, who would it be and why?

That’s so hard! The first character that popped into mind was Daine from Tamora Pierce’s Immortals series. She was my favourite childhood heroine and I fell in love with fantasy because of her.

Finish this sentence "I can't live without..."

Goodreads. It’s always open on my computer 24/7. It’s so addictive.

Who is your favourite book hero and book villian?

Favourite hero: Harry Potter. You seriously can’t beat him. Favourite villain: Elphaba from Wicked by Gregory Maguire. She made me understand the plight of the villain better than any other character. But to combine the both, my favourite anti-hero is Snape from the Harry Potter series. So evil, so heroic, so amazing. Easily one of the best characters ever written.

What is one book you would like to see come to the big screen?

The Subtle Knife & The Amber Spyglass by Philip Pullman. I was so disappointed when they stopped after The Golden Compass. You can’t just leave an audience dangling forever! It’s one of the best series ever written and deserves to be finished.

What is one guilty pleasure that you have?

Classical music. Ever since we started playing Holst’s The Planets in band class I can’t stop listening to it. Bach, Beethoven, you name it, I’m listening to it.

Aside from reading and blogging, what do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I volunteer at my local library but that’s pretty book-oriented too, eh? I listen to a lot of indie-folk music and love researching new bands on Youtube. I’m pursuing a degree in theatre this fall so in the past 5 years or so I’ve done oodles of community theatre and choirs. Love to act!

Any tips or words of advice for new book bloggers?

While it pains me to say this, it is all about how you look. You can have the best reviews, features, interviews, etc. but if your header and background aren’t pleasing, you won’t get as many followers. Also, network! Use twitter, goodreads, and comment on as many blogs as you can.

What books are you looking forward to reading this summer?

I’m doing a read-a-thon in July and Indie Author Month in August so a bit of everything. My copies of Mara Dyer, Forbidden, and Dust & Decay are calling to me from the bookshelves though.

Crazy Quiz

Favourite childhood book?

I remember borrowing Strega Nona by Tomie dePaola an obnoxious number of times in kindergarten, but as a child probably Little House on the Prairie or Nancy Drew. I was all about the classics.

Favourite all time movie?

SO HARD! I’d have to go with the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Witches or Wizards?

Wizards. Witches remind me of Twitches or that one Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen movie. Wizards are way cooler.

Twilight or Harry Potter?

Harry Potter, hands down. HP is my homeboy. I cried through the books and movies. Not so much with Twilight.

One super power you would like to have?

Flight! In a lot of my dreams I can fly and it’s always so depressing to wake up with gravity.

Be sure to head on over to The Zealous Reader and say Hello!
