Author Sandra Edwards Guest Post

The Crazy Bookworm is thrilled to have Sandra Edwards return for another guest post! Today is she speaking about how she came up with her amazing book 'Crazy for you'. Enjoy!

So often people ask me, “Where do you get your ideas?”

There was a time when that inquiry was scary because there isn’t a simple answer. These days, I say, in jest, “From the Idea Store.”

More times than not, it’s hard to pinpoint exactly where an idea comes from. Usually, for me, it takes a combination of things to get the seeds of an idea started. Take for instance, the book Crazy For You. It was the 80s and I was fresh out of college when I started thinking about the story that would one day become this book.

The romance genre was heavy on my mind—thanks to a college professor—but I wanted to create something that was different from the typical “romance novel”. At the time, I just didn’t know what.

I remember distinctly a day at the beach, when a friend and I had played “hooky” from work. A song poured out from the speakers of the portable radio we’d brought with us. It was a tune about a guy who’d gotten his heart broken by a woman of the night. (And no, it wasn’t The Police’s song “Roxanne” ;-).

In the days and weeks to come, the more I heard this song on the radio, the more I began to wonder if the words were personal. If the songwriter had fallen in love with a hooker who’d subsequently done him wrong.

I think that’s about the time a couple of unnamed characters were born, fully grown, inside my head. I knew in an instant what they looked like. The guy quickly let me know his name was Frank. The girl, the object of his affection (although some say obsession), didn’t have a name. But still, I could see her clear as day. Most of my characters will let me know if they have a name preference, but she never did. And since titles and names are my weakness, I named her Roxanne because of that very popular Police song (but again I’d like to reiterate that it had nothing else to do with the story). Everything sort of blossomed from there.

My curiosity over the songwriter’s love life eventually turned into a very complicated story that admittedly visits some dark and controversial topics. Crazy For You isn’t for everyone. But is it for you? The first one hundred pages (approximately 25% of the book) is available at my website as a printable PDF download. The Kindle version can be purchased in its entirety for the current sale price of $0.99. Smashwords customers can use coupon code YJ59Q to receive the Kindle price.

  8. I love Crazy For You. I didn't realize Sandy got it from listening to a song. I think it's great when music can inspire a writer. This is a very good book. It stayed with me for a long time after I read id.
