Scars by Cheryl Rainfield

Reading level: Young Adult Hardcover: 250 pages Publisher: Westside Books Published: March 24, 2010 ISBN: 978-1934813324 About the Book:Kendra is not your average teenage girl. She is being forced to deal with surfacing memories of sexual abuse, but the most important detail is missing...her abusers identity. Kendra only has a small group of people she can really trust and confide in, and her parents do not fit into this group. Carolyn who is Kendra's therapist, Sandy a family friend that has always supported Kendra, Meghan a friend and maybe more, and Miss Archer her art teacher. Kendra cuts herself to relieve the pain and pressure of her surfacing memories, it is the only way she can cope aside from her artwork. Now Kendra finds herself being watched and followed constantly and she knows its him, her abuser. Her fears are confirmed when she starts receiving messages from him, threatening her life if she utters a word about her abuse. Will Kendra ever remember her abusers identity? My Thoughts: This is not a light book, it has a pretty heavy storyline. The book starts off a little slow, but once it picks up it really starts moving. I found myself flying through the pages wanting to know what was coming next. Cheryl Rainfield did a great job with the character development in this book, every character was so well written. Kendra's mother really drove me nuts in this book, she was so overbearing of Kendra, hounding her, criticizing her but when Kendra tried to talk to her, her mother would never listen. The author did a wonderful job creating Kendra, although she was given a horrific thing to deal with, the author made her a strong character. I really enjoyed this book, I loved the suspense part of it and the emotional part of it. If you do not mind a heavy storyline then you should definitely pick this book up. It is worth the read!

  4. I have this book on my to-read list. It's not a subject I'd normally seek out but this book intrigued me. While disturbing, it's a topic that needs to be out in the open, particularly when dealt with in the right way. Judging by your review, Rainfield did just that.
